Konrad Strzalka from the Telegraph Herald meet with the family of Cameron Schaefer, a 22-year-old from Dickeyville, Wisconsin, is honoring his life and impact by launching a new nonprofit, “Live Like Cam,” following his death in August 2024 from injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash near Potosi, Wisconsin.
Cameron was remembered by his family and friends as someone who was always willing to help others without hesitation. His stepfather, Jonathan Copeland, and his mother, Amy Copeland, described him as kind, hardworking, and deeply connected to everyone around him—an “old soul” who could talk to anyone and brighten a room. His family also shared that even after his passing, he continues to impact lives through organ donation, with recipients including individuals who received his heart and liver.
The nonprofit, Live Like Cam, was introduced during a community launch event held in East Dubuque. It aims to carry forward Cameron’s legacy by supporting causes he was passionate about, including trade education, outdoor activities, organ donor awareness, and road and motorcycle safety.
Cameron earned a diploma in electrical power distribution from Southwest Wisconsin Technical College and worked as a maintenance mechanic at East Dubuque Nitrogen Fertilizers. His father, Shawn Schaefer, shared how meaningful it has been to hear from people whose lives were saved through Cameron’s organ donations.
The launch event drew strong community support, featuring food, music, auctions, and family activities, with organizers expecting more than 200 attendees. Cameron’s stepmother, Sheila Schaefer, and the rest of the family expressed gratitude for the support and hope the nonprofit will continue making a lasting impact in his memory.
